He knew this day would be one of his favourite memories of all time. If he could bottle the feeling, he would. He’d keep it for ever.

It started with the match, which was one of the best. The winter sun was warm against his body. He felt free. He moved quickly and easily along the wing – his feet barely scuffing the ground, the ball seemed to be attached to his foot, moving effortlessly with him as he twisted and turned past defenders. He could hear the cheers as he sped past the small crowd, and his heart thumped in his chest as his foot made final contact with the ball, firing it into the top corner of the goal.

It had been so easy. So perfect.

The whistle blew and his team crowded round, hugging him, pulling him towards them. He was their star player.

Mum and Dad were both there, wrapped up warm against the cold. He could see his mum’s face, pink with cold, grinning out at him. She looked good, healthy. Alive.

It was all going to be OK. She would get better again.

They were going to be OK.

Mum told him how proud she was. Teased him for having mud on his face and caked in his hair. But she didn’t really care. Even Dad seemed relaxed, rocking back on his heels and smiling down on the both of them.

“You’re going to be my superstar,” said his mum, and he believed her.

They took him for a meal in a local pub. He was still covered in mud and probably looked a state, but today nobody minded. They ordered three large roast dinners and sat by the open fire to eat them. The food was tasty, and he had never felt so hungry. Even Mum ate well, although a little slower than them.

“When I’m completely better, we should get a dog,” she said.

Dad looked up, surprised. “Seriously?”

“Yes. Why not? A lovely girl dog. We’ll name her Poppy. That’s what I would have called my daughter if I’d had one.”

“I’d love that, Mum,” he’d said.

Dad nodded. “OK. If you want.”

He smiled. This really was the best day.
